Mrs. L Balasubramanyam
Mrs. Lakshmi Balasubrahmanyam has a Master’s in Science (Gold Medalist) in Biology (Botany) in 1963. She is amongst the pioneers who made a smart entry into the world of Patents and IPR after having an illustrious career as a senior environmental Scientist and R&D specialist for more than 20 years. Since then she had been an ardent crusader of Intellectual Property protection primarily in the areas of life sciences, biotechnology, and plant varieties. Has to her credit drafting of about 1000 patent applications and more than 3000 prosecutions that she has successfully contested as a registered Patent agent at the Indian Patent Office including countries outside India. More significantly, she was involved in the Government of India in two US re-examinations of controversial patents on Basmati and Turmeric. She also drafted the Sub-legislation for the ‘Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Bill, 2000. Prior to her current practice, she headed the Intellectual Property Management Division (IPMD) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). She had also been a visiting professor for IPR at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, New Delhi. She is an esteemed member of the Executive Council of the Center for New Product Development Trade and Transfer Noida and is currently heading its Life Sciences Division.
